Love Song

He sat there in the stillness of the night, barely breathing as he looked down at the woman who lay in the bed beside him. His wife. Silence for three years, and then, she’d finally said yes.

Come into these arms again and lay your body down

The rhythm of this trembling heart is beating like a drum

She stirred slightly, and he reached out, gently touching the fiery red strands of hair that spilled like liquid flame across the pillow. He thought for a moment, recalling the moment that his hand had touched the other aspect of himself that held the emotions within him.

It beats for you it bleeds for you, it knows not how it sounds

For it is the drum of drums, it is the song of songs

He'd have given his soul for her right then and there, taken it out and handed it to her on a platter, had it been possible. The emotions were so new, so real, so unlike anything he had ever tried to comprehend before.

And he told her that, with whispered words. ‘You haunt me, burning through me like fire incarnate.’

Once I had the rarest rose that ever deemed to bloom

Cruel winter chilled the bud and stole my flower too soon

And then she’d vanished into the night, taking his heart with her.

Oh loneliness, oh hopelessness to search the ends of time

For there is in all the world no greater love than mine.

He’d let her go, what right did he have to keep her against her will’ He loved her enough to let her go, to wait for her return. Even though it might kill him.

And it very nearly did.

Love o love o .... still falls the rain

Love o love o .... still falls the night

Love o love o .... they fall forever

Her return had brought him back, of that he had little doubt. That part of him had awakened again, called by her touch. And now… now, his fingers brushed her cheek softly.

Let me be the only one to keep you from the cold

Now the floor of heaven is laid the stars are bright as gold

She stirred again, opening crimson eyes to smile gently up to him, her hands reaching for him, to pull him close to her, head tilted slightly to kiss him, eyes glittering in the darkness.

They shine for you, they shine for you, they burn for all to see

Come into these arms again and set this spirit free

With a soft sigh, he gave into her embrace, wrapping his arms around her, bringing her close. His touch spoke of one who dared not let go, and she held him until he fell asleep.
