Fire on the Water

When I touch you, I can feel you shivering.
I can feel your heart is beating fast.
We are alone in this crowded room.
For tonight, there is something happening.
And it’s something that should never be.
But there’s a flame over you and me.

They stood on the dance floor, looking at each other. It was all Amelia and Jedah’s fault. Those two had started it back at that surprise ball… and now… now Lina and Zelgadis were thoroughly enjoying the dance.
They turned, dancing across the room amidst the other dancers, but to them, they were the only ones in the grand ballroom of the castle by the sea.

And I can see the fire on the water
I can see the light shining in your eyes
I know that I can’t stop it now
‘Cause I’ve been caught in the heat of the sun

Lina smiled at him, caught in the moment of the music and the setting sun over the water beside the city. When had she ever felt so happy… so at complete peace with the world?
Zelgadis knew that it was real, but for some reason, dancing with her, here in this city in the Outer Continent where no one knew them and no one judged… it felt like a dream.

There’s a place in an ancient fortress
High above the worries of the world
I’d love you there for a long, long time
And we’ll discover all our deepest secrets
And let the spirit go flying free
Until the dawn breaks over the sea

He pulled her close, drawing her into his arms and watched with secret amusement as she blushed. Three days they had been away from everyone, and she still hadn’t managed to start looking at him without blushing. Of course, he still felt strangely giddy when she smiled that shy smile at him, like a boy with a new toy.
The music turned them across the room, moved them over to near a window, and the evening sun lit her eyes and hair like magic. In that simple moment, he fell in love with her all over again. Pausing in mid-dance, he lowered his arms around her and leaned in to kiss her.

It’s burning like fire on the water
I can see the light shining in your eyes
I know that I can’t stop it now
‘Cause I’ve been caught in the heat of the sun
Yes, I’ve been caught in the heat of the sun.
Oh… let it shine on me.

There was, of course, an audience. He watched with half-lidded violet eyes, seeing the two seemingly careless in the moment. He too was caught in her fire, and yet, could do nothing for it. She would never have him… and yet, if she did want him… it would be his destruction.
And so he contented himself to watch them dance. Fire and water, caught in the sun.

And I can see the fire on the water
I can see the light shining in your eyes
I know that I can’t stop it now
‘Cause I’ve been caught in the heat of the sun
Yes, I’ve been caught in the heat of the sun.
Oh… let it shine on me.
