Don't Speak

You and me
We used to be together
Every day together always
I really feel
That I'm losing my best friend
I can't believe
This could be the end

Amelia sighed and rolled over in the sleeping bag. She wasn’t asleep, but she didn’t want anyone to worry about her. She was worried enough about Zelgadis. He’d headed off on his own again just a few hours ago. Something about a new lead for a cure.

It looks as though you're letting go
And if it's real
Well I don't want to know

The blue eyes of the Princess of Sailune stared up at the stars and the girl again went over the conversation in her mind. He’d acted so… strangely.

Don't speak
I know just what you're saying
So please stop explaining
Don't tell me 'cause it hurts
Don't speak
I know what you're thinking
I don't need your reasons
Don't tell me 'cause it hurts

“But Mister Zelgadis… we’re your friends. Why shouldn’t we come along and help?” Amelia protested, putting her hands on his arm.
He shook free from her grasp and shouldered his pack. “Amelia, I have to do this alone. Anyone going with me is just likely to get in my way.”
“But… Zelgadis…?” She said quietly, looking down so that he wouldn’t see the tears that she was fighting.
“No, Amelia.” And with that, he had walked off without another word.

Our memories
They can be inviting
But some are altogether
Mighty frightening

The feeling she’d had when she’d seen Zelgadis nearly broken by Garv came rushing back, and she turned to bury her face in the pillow. She’d almost lost him then… and still hadn’t gotten herself together enough to tell him how she felt. And now… now he was gone and it was too late.

As we die, both you and I
With my head in my hands
I sit and cry

The pillow was quickly becoming soaked, but she was doing her best to be quiet about it. Surely she wouldn’t wake Lina… and Mister Gourry was on watch. With any luck, neither of them would ever know.

Don't speak
I know just what you're saying
So please stop explaining
Don't tell me 'cause it hurts
Don't speak
I know what you're thinking
And I don't need your reasons
Don't tell me 'cause it hurts

“No, Amelia.” And he was gone into the woods. Just like that.

It's all ending
I gotta stop pretending who we are

You and me
I can see us dying...are we?

            Just like that.

Don't speak
I know just what you're saying
So please stop explaining
Don't tell me 'cause it hurts
Don't speak
I know what you're thinking
And I don't need your reasons
Don't tell me 'cause it hurts
Don't tell me 'cause it hurts!

A hand touched her hair, and without looking, Amelia knew that she’d woken Lina. The tears came new with Lina’s touch, and Amelia could only cry harder and pray that Lina wouldn’t offer hollow words of comfort.

I know just what you're saying
So please stop explaining

Don't speak
Don't speak
Don't speak

I know what you're thinking
And I don't need your reasons
I know you're good
I know you're good
I know you're real good

Eventually, sleep would win out over the Princess’ pain. Lina knew this. And she also knew the reason why Zelgadis had left. But she couldn’t tell Amelia. She’d sworn she’d never tell.

La la la la
La la la la
Don't, Don't...

The sobs quieted, and Lina looked up to the stars and wished desperately that she hadn’t come across Zelgadis packing. Wished that he hadn’t told her in quiet words.

Hush Hush Darlin'
Hush Hush Darlin'
Hush Hush
Don't tell me 'cause it hurts
Hush Hush Darlin'
Hush Hush Darlin'
Hush Hush
Don't tell me 'cause it hurts

But he had. And while he’d have given his life and soul for the girl, he said, he couldn’t love Amelia while his heart was covered in stone.
